Violin

Winnie Hui-Wen Cheng is an accomplished violinist based in Amsterdam and Luxembourg, renowned for her dynamic artistry and ability to move effortlessly across
musical genres. Equally at home in classical, contemporary, and experimental music, she has built a thriving career spanning Europe and Taiwan, captivating audiences worldwide with her expressive performances and innovative approach. As a soloist, she has performed violin concertos with orchestras, showcasing her virtuosity and emotional depth on prominent stages.

Since 2020, Winnie has been the violinist of the United Instruments of Lucilin, a leading modern music ensemble in Luxembourg. In 2024, she became a core member of the ensemble, serving as a permanent musician and a member of its Musician’s Committee. That same year, she joined the Solistes Européens, Luxembourg, further solidifying her reputation as an in-demand performer in Europe. Her career has taken her to renowned stages and festivals, including the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Berlin Philharmonie, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Cologne Acht Brücken Festival, and the Venice Biennale. In Taiwan, she is equally active as a performer, regularly collaborating with local ensembles and appearing at major festivals.

Winnie’s musical journey is marked by numerous accolades. She has won multiple competitions in Taiwan and represented the Hannover University of Music in the
Mendelssohn Competition in Berlin, where her string quartet earned second prize. Her ability to navigate diverse musical styles—ranging from the precision of classical repertoire to the cutting-edge techniques of contemporary and experimental music—sets her apart as an artist of remarkable depth and versatility.
In addition to her performance career, Winnie is deeply committed to music education. She has taught at the preparatory department of the Amsterdam Conservatory and is a faculty member at the Salut! Taiwan International Music Festival, where she teaches violin and chamber music. Additionally, she runs a private studio in Amsterdam, fostering the next generation of musicians with her passionate and holistic approach to teaching.

Winnie’s educational background reflects her extensive training. She holds a Bachelor’ and Master’s degree in Violin Solo from the Amsterdam Conservatory, a Master’s degree in Chamber Music from the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in String Quartet from the Netherlands String Quartet Academy. She is currently pursuing a “Konzertexamen” Solo Diploma in New Music for Solo Instrumentalist at the Hochschule für Musik Saar.
Her recordings reflect her artistic diversity. She played as part of a featured string quartet for the album Epiphyllum by jazz singer Lo Yen-Ting, which won the prestigious Global Music Award. She also had a prominent solo role in the soundtrack of THIS WILD ABYSS by film composer Jesper Ankarfeldt. Her performances of classical repertoire can also be seen on YouTube, offering audiences a glimpse of her expressive interpretations and technical mastery. These projects, alongside her solo performances with orchestras and her active presence in both Europe and Taiwan, underscore her ability to seamlessly blend
classical technique with contemporary and experimental sounds, solidifying her unique voice in today’s music landscape.
