Gerd Van Looy rejoint Lucilin

United Instruments of Lucilin is pleased to announce the appointment of Gerd Van Looy as Head of Artistic Development. He succeeds Florence Martin, the former Director of the ensemble, and will work closely with Guy Frisch, Strategic Director, in a dynamic aimed at developing the ensemble in Luxembourg and internationally.

After studying philosophy and cultural sciences, Gerd Van Looy has developed solid artistic expertise through numerous professional experiences in the fields of theater, scenography, and music. He began his career in 1993 at deSingel, before joining Les Ballets C de la B in 1996. In 2001, he was appointed Production Manager for Bruges 2002, European Capital of Culture. From 2003 to 2008, he led several independent projects for Canvascollectie, the India festival at BOZAR, the film festivals in Ghent and Brussels, as well as for dance companies such as Peeping Tom and Ultima Vez/Wim Vandekeybus. From 2008 to 2015, he worked at BOZAR as an artistic coordinator and responsible for cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary projects. He then served as the director of the contemporary music ensemble Ictus from 2015 to 2023, before applying his skills to various artistic projects in France and Belgium, including Clermont-Ferrand’s candidacy for European Capital of Culture, the Musiques Démesurées festival, L’Instant Donné, Europalia, and the kunstencentrum KAAP festival. In 2024, he joins United Instruments of Lucilin as Head of Artistic Development.

« Musical creation is experiencing a new momentum today. More diverse than ever in terms of styles and forms, it is embedded in numerous artistic networks beyond traditional concert halls. From visual art to theater, through dance and the rich and varied landscape of experimental and traditional music, creation is flourishing fully.
In a context that calls for all forms of art to meet and push the boundaries of creativity, I am enthusiastically joining United Instruments of Lucilin. As we approach the 25th anniversary of the ensemble and look forward to the next 25 years, our ambition is to strengthen the dynamics established since its inception, cultivate the artistic project, and contribute to the building of a solid European network for creative music. This involves fostering dialogue between new works and the existing repertoire, encouraging creative exchanges between various styles and artistic practices, and reaching out to a more diverse audience composed of contemporary music enthusiasts and art lovers of all kinds, as well as explorers in search of renewal. »
