Lucilin in the City #17 – Man x Machine
Man x Machine
When man meets machine, for better or for worse!
Since the first stone tools to the era of artificial intelligence, humanity has maintained an ambivalent relationship with its inventions. Machines simplify our lives while also fostering dependency and danger. This musical program explores this duality through works that question our connection with machines, oscillating between fascination and fear of obsolescence.
The program begins with an unpublished composition by Pol Belardi, inspired by the recording of a car accident he experienced. James Ledger, in All Hail the Machine, evokes dependency on modern media through music that reflects technological chaos. Daydreaming by Radiohead, arranged by Max Mausen, immerses us in an introspective universe, addressing isolation and the search for meaning in a world often perceived as cold and mechanical. With Modul 42 by Nik Bärtsch, mechanical precision and organic elements intertwine, illustrating the ambiguous coexistence between humans and machines. Max Mausen’s arrangement of themes from Terminator and Matrix plunges us into an epic battle between humans and machines, depicting a future where they turn against their creators. The program concludes with a lighter piece by Pol Belardi: the theme from the film Le Gant du Pied, projected during the concert, tracing life in a shoe factory in Luxembourg. This contrast highlights the transition between machines from the industrial era and those from the digital age.
These pieces form a reflection on our relationship with machines: should we glorify them or fear them? Are we destined to become obsolete in the face of our own creations?
